　オレの家は卵(形の土地)の先端にあって海岸からほんの50ヤードほどの場所で、一シーズンに家賃が12,000から15,000ドルは見込めそうな二件の豪邸に挟まれていた。向かって右側の家はどこから見ても超豪華で、実際にノルマンディの市庁舎を真似ているんだと思う。脇には薄い髭のような蔦が絡み付いた真新しい塔がそびえ、大理石造りのプールがあり、少なくとも40エーカーはある敷地と芝生があった。ギャッツビーの邸宅だった。いや、ギャッツビーをまだ知らなかったんで、その名前の紳士がそこに住んでいたというべきか。　

　オレの家はひどくみすぼらしかったけど、あまりに小さいので気にはならなかった。ロングアイランド湾を見渡し、隣人の芝生の隅を眺めては、億万長者のご近所さんと自分をなぐさめてた。こういうのも全部込みで家賃は月80ドル。

　名ばかりの入江の向こうには、流行の最先端をいくイーストエッグの海岸沿いに輝く白亜の豪邸が立ち並んでいた。

　そしてトム・ブキャナン夫妻と夕食をとるために、小さな入江を渡ってイーストエッグまで車を走らせた夕方から、その夏の物語が始まった。デイジーはオレの遠い親戚で、トムとは学生時代からの知り合いだった。戦争が終わったすぐ後に、シカゴで彼らの家に2日間世話になったこともあった。

Chapter 1-20

My house was at the very tip of the egg, only fifty yards from the Sound, and squeezed between two huge places that rented for twelve or fifteen thousand a season. The one on my right was a colossal affair by any standard--it was a factual imitation of some Hôtel de Ville in Normandy, with a tower on one side, spanking new under a thin beard of raw ivy, and a marble swimming pool and more than forty acres of lawn and garden. It was Gatsby's mansion. Or rather, as I didn't know Mr. Gatsby it was a mansion inhabited by a gentleman of that name. My own house was an eye-sore, but it was a small eye-sore, and it had been overlooked, so I had a view of the water, a partial view of my neighbor's lawn, and the consoling proximity of millionaires--all for eighty dollars a month.

Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water, and the history of the summer really begins on the evening I drove over there to have dinner with the Tom Buchanans. Daisy was my second cousin once removed and I'd known Tom in college. And just after the war I spent two days with them in Chicago.

要するに、デイジーは、肖像画になってるあの大叔父さん(great uncle) のひ孫なんだ。

日本語ではそれに相当する言葉がある？あっても日常使わないんで「遠い親戚」にしておいた。
