　オレの家族は、中西部では三代続くわりと名の知られた裕福な家。キャラウエイ家は貴族の流れを引いており、バクルー公爵の末裔だとも言われている。だけど実際に今の地位を築いたのは祖父の兄で、1851年にアメリカに渡り、南北戦争従軍は人に譲り、今親父がやっている金物の卸商を始めたのが最初だ。

Chapter 1-11

My family have been prominent, well-to-do people in this middle-western city for three generations. The Carraways are something of a clan and we have a tradition that we're descended from the Dukes of Buccleuch, but the actual founder of my line was my grandfather's brother who came here in fifty-one, sent a substitute to the Civil War and started the wholesale hardware business my father carries on today.
