　ギャッツビーはオレの隣人だと答える前に夕飯の時間が告げられた。トムはひき締まった腕でオレの腕を掴み、チェッカーのコマを進めるように有無をいわせず部屋から連れ出した。

　二人の女は手を腰に添えて、ほっそりした体つきで物憂げに歩きながら、風が止んで4本のキャンドルの灯が揺れる夕暮れ時のバラ色のベランダに案内した。
